Abstract

A multi-million-dollar advertising campaign promoting Jesus is a recent attempt to engage those who are marginalized and disenfranchised from the church in the United States. With concise epitaphs and clever uses of social media, Jesus is presented as not simply a model for life, but as someone who understands us. Backed by a million dollars of marketing research, the Jesus of “He Gets Us” attempts to contextualize Jesus by connecting his stories with contemporary cultural touchpoints. This article will critique the media campaign and evaluate whether or not “He Gets Us” accurately portrays the New Testament Jesus.
